Having been tasked with developing the 1994 UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP), the UK Biodiversity Steering Group set about employing a method to classify all UK habitats under threat and in need of action to safeguard their future. The UK BAP refers to two habitat groups: broad habitats and priority habitats.
A UK BAP broad habitat is described in broad terms and can often include a number of UK BAP priority habitats.
