Experts have stepped up their efforts to protect and enhance the county's wildlife with the launch of two projects: the new Kent and Medway Biological Records Centre, a huge database of detailed wildlife information on different species and habitats collected by experts and naturalists over several decades; and the updated Kent Biodiversity Action Plan, which identifies what needs to be done to ensure a healthy future for Kent's wildlife, with an emphasis on 28 UK BAP priority habitats.
A wide variety of conservation organisations gathered at Wildwood to consider how best they can look after the county's wildlife in the future. Following a series of presentations, guests went on a tour of the 42-acre Wildwood to see some of the 300 British animals there.

The Kent Wildlife Trust has developed a Local Wildlife Sites system; a register of sites that have been selected for their nature conservation importance in Kent. The Kent Biodiversity Partnership Steering Group members oversee their selection and delineation.

The reason they are so important is because Government has stated that Local Wildlife Sites are a material consideration for local authorities when deciding on whether a planning application should be allowed.
